England had to deal with the american revolution in 1776. Spain would regain Florida in 1783. Napoleon took the territory from the spanish, and sold the territory in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase.

The Louisiana Purchase effect

The treaty of the Louisiana Purchase had no definitive Western Border, causing a heated debate between Spain and the U.S.  Spain debated the legitimacy of Napoleon’s sale and they attempted to say the boundary was the eastern bank of the Mississippi river, excluding West Florida.

The First Seminole War

A deadlock in negotiations over the Louisiana Purchase was meant to be accelerated by the war of 1812, but this failed. The Napoleonic wars delayed negotiations. Then, in 1817, Andrew Jackson invaded Florida during the first seminole war.
