The Adams-Onis Treaty
In 1817, John Quincy Adams became secretary of state. Soon, Adams and president James Monroe made efforts to acquire Florida. In Europe, spain had many internal problems and its colonies to the west were on the brink of revolution. Spanish's Minister saw that he may lose florida for nothing, and he signed the Adams-Onis treaty, passed on February 22,1821. This treaty set the longitudes and latitudes of the Louisiana Purchase, and the U.S. acquired Florida.
